Those sheep up top don’t look much like Kilburn, sorry!  They came with the software that’s running our new website.  If you’ve got good pics of our area that you’d like to see on this site, and especially in that prime space across the top of the page, then please email them to hilary@regordane.net.

Come and join the Big Lunch!

Sunday July 18, 1-5 pm: Charteris Road and the sports centre

Put 18 July in your diaries and calendars now for the first ever BEST Big Lunch event.

Thanks to the Streets for People scheme, our 11 streets are becoming safer and more pleasant places to live, work and socialise. To celebrate our new look and all your efforts to make it happen, BEST is organising a street party in and around Charteris Road. Bring a picnic or a dish to share, invite some friends and come along to meet your neighbours and find out what’s going on in your community.

So far the day will include:

  • badminton and table tennis in conjunction with Charteris Sports Centre
  • bike activities, including Dr Bike and bike painting with local artist Dalia Zermon
  • stalls and live music
  • information about BEST’s community gardening project and on Transition K2K, an exciting local project to make our community more self sufficient
  • advice from Community Police on how personal safety and how to counter burglary
  • housing and other information from Brent Private Tenants’ Rights Group.

We’re just getting started on planning BEST’s Big Lunch and would love to hear from anyone who can help make the day a success. Could you run a stall or provide some music? Or could you run games or activities for children?

We’re also planning a Big Bike Ride, where cyclists of all ages can ride around our streets and between other local Big Lunch events!

The BEST Big Lunch and Big Bike Ride take part on Sunday 18 July from 12-5pm in Charteris Road and Charteris Sports Centre. To find out more, contact Josie on 07773 865 917 or email josiewarshaw@aol.com

Kimberley Road Playground

From Cllr Mary Arnold, Funding for Fair Play

Our campaigning to increase children’s play and ball court areas in the BEST and BRAT area is beginning to kick in. Kimberley Rd playground is now on the BHP (Brent Housing Partnership) list of Environmental Improvements marked urgent due to Health and Safety issues. It has also been identified for upgrading in the Playbuilder Scheme for which Brent has £1million government funding to spend over three years. Kimberley Rd is one of 20 schemes and is scheduled for year 2 (2009/10). Streatley Road gardens is also earmarked for funding.

BRAT, BEST and other residents’ associations and local residents have been involved in the call for action and the final design of the area, which must be subject to consultation, could provide for the various needs, which are both for 8 – 13s (the Playbuilder programme) and older children wanting other activities.

Streets for People

By Sam Roberts

The aim of the Brent ‘Streets for People’ scheme is to improve the local environment of the BEST (Brent Eleven Streets) area and to make it a better place to live through creating more open space, more green areas for pedestrians and reducing the volume of traffic through the area. In September 2007 Brent Council appointed a partnership of firms specialising in transport research and urban design, Transport & Travel Research Ltd and Colin Davis Associates, to assist in working towards achieving these aims. These firms will carry out a number of activities within the BEST area from November 2007 to early 2008, including a travel survey, resident’s meetings and working groups. The Streets for People project is aimed at making the area a better place for the residents and as such the project will look to involve residents as much as possible.

One of the main activities of the Streets for People scheme is the introduction of a local area Travel Plan which will have the aims of promoting walking, cycling, public transport and car clubs as alternatives to private car ownership. To begin this process, residents will be encouraged to complete a travel survey so that data can be collected on current travel patterns and needs. This survey will be undertaken by post, and residents should expect to receive this within the first weeks of November 2007. These questionnaires will be supplied with a FREEPOST return envelope. There will also be a prize draw for completed questionnaires with prizes of car club membership and driving credit donated by Zipcar. For more information about car clubs and Zipcar please see the following websites: www.brentcarclub.net and www.zipcar.co.uk/brent.

Alongside the survey, we are also interested in gaining residents’ opinions on ideas and proposals and wish to invite residents to become involved in two particular aspects of the overall scheme; ‘green transport’ and ‘urban design’. There will be a number of meetings where groups of residents can discuss these issues in relation to the plans for the BEST area. These events will be publicised locally, however if you are interested in finding out more details or joining one of these groups then please contact Sarah Clifford (0208 240 4461, sarah.clifford@ttr-ltd.com) or Sam Roberts (01543 416 416, sam.roberts@ttr-ltd.com).

Updated!

The deadline for the Streets for People survey has now been extended until the 7th of December to allow more residents to complete and return their questionnaires. If you have received the questionnaire form but not yet completed and returned it, I kindly ask that you do so. If you have misplaced the questionnaire, they are now available to download from this website. There are 2 versions available to download; click here for the PDF version which is for you to print out, complete and return by post, or click here for the Microsoft Word version which is for downloading and completing electronically, before returning via email. If you have any questions, please contact Sam Roberts, 01543 416 416 or email sam.roberts@ttr-ltd.com
